A breath of fresh air is the best therapy!

Sometimes the best therapy is a breath of fresh air!

It might seem odd to promote other things besides physio as useful therapy but it occurred to me the other day, while walking my dogs on a beautiful (if chilly) sunny day, what wonderful therapy it is to get outside in the fresh air. After the run of horrible weather we have had, it is great to get outside and feel the sun on your face and the breeze on your skin. Years ago it was absolutely de rigueur to head to the Alps for a dose of clear air to recover from all sorts of ailments. I think it is a much-needed tonic we often forget about these days. There is nothing more likely to make you feel tired, lethargic and ill than being stuck indoors day after day. Just as I was writing this, a news item appeared with the headline “ ‘Green’ exercise boosts mental health” (see link below), so there is also some science behind this theory!

My tip for this month? Get yourself outside, no matter what the weather (ok maybe not all weathers – I am writing this on a particularly horrid, stormy day!) Wrap up warm and head off by any means you are able to some outside space. It doesn’t matter if it is for a brisk walk in the countryside, a stroll by the beach or just sitting in a park or your garden. I promise you will feel energised and better for it… and if you want to do a bit of exercise while you are there then great, but sometimes all you need to feel a bit better is a breath of fresh air!
