Pilates is a form of exercise first developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1940’s. It focuses on beginning movement from a central core of stability and by concentrating on precision of movement, awareness of breath control and a continued flowing movement, the exerciser can alter abnormal patterns of movement and achieve a carry over effect into daily life.
Clinical Pilates is usually taught by a physiotherapist, the movements are practiced in sequences with breathing and focus and can be progressed and adapted for every level and ability. Evidence has shown improvements in balance, core strength, walking ability and a reduction in falls in older people and neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Stroke. Early results also suggest that the flowing, rhythmic sequences in conjunction with increased flexibility and core control can have a beneficial effect on those with Parkinson’s Disease.
A physiotherapist led class is kept small enough to allow for individual corrections to be made and ensure everyone is working safely and at the right level. An assessment will be made prior to the classes starting to establish the right exercises for the participant and to take outcome measures enabling you to track your progress. A physiotherapist trained in Pilates also has the added background skills and training to know the abilities and limitations of individual conditions, meaning a safe exercise environment for all participants. Sense Ability Therapy Classes have a particular background in managing neurological conditions and the complex multi pathology that can be present as people get older.
Dizziness can be caused by a multitude of problems. Physiotherapy exercises cannot help all causes of dizziness but following assessment your physiotherapist will be able to tell you if further assessment or onward referral is required or if a programme of rehabilitation is suitable for you. Vestibular rehabilitation consists of specific eye and head exercises to challenge and retrain the vestibular system in conjunction with general balance exercise rehabilitation.
